Why Controlling Your Anger Makes You a More Useful Person

By Christopher Hall

Did you know that someone who can control their anger and their temper is more useful - more useful to everyone?

Proverbs 16:32 – He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

He that is slow to get angry is better than ___. You can put anything you want to in the blank. He is better than the mighty is what the Bible verse says. The idea there is that a person who can control his temper is better than the best warrior that a general would have because he is able to control himself. But you could put just about anything you want to on the other side of that “better.”

A man who can control his temper is a better worker. He is a better husband. He is a better child. He is a better employee. He is a better employer. Anybody who can control his temper is always going to be better than someone who cannot control their temper. He will be more useful. God can find more ways to use a person who can control his temper than those who can’t.

It just makes sense. Anybody who is well-disciplined is more useful. It doesn’t matter what area of discipline it is, but especially in something that is as blatant and destructive as a temper. A lot of people have no discretion where they ignite their temper. They are just as willing to ignite it in the middle of Wal-mart as they are in the middle of their living room. Maybe at school with their teacher or at work with their employer.

People like that aren’t very useful. God can’t use them. They are not very practical when it comes to being a good employee, a good worker, or a good employer. They are just not very useful.
