Marriage Finances - Uncover 3 Secrets to Dramatically Improving Finances in Your Marriage

By Christopher Hall

Statistics show that 43% of all couples fight over finances. With the financial mess this world is in, the pressure in marriages has grown even more. What can you do to make sure that you and your spouse stay on the same page when it comes to your checkbook?

1. Set Financial Goals

Have you every looked at your bank account and wondered where all of the money went? You don’t remember spending a lot, but sure enough, all your money is gone! More than likely this happened because you did not have a budget or a set of financial goals you were trying to achieve. Most problems in a marriage can be prevented by addressing them before they become problems. Financial problems are no differing. If you set financial goals for each paycheck, your marriage will run much more smoothly.

2. Don’t Try To Get Everything Your Parents Have

So many newlyweds assume that their parents have always had nice things, so they think they should have those nice things as well. This is just simply not true. When my wife and I got married, we lived in an apartment for a year until we bought our first 2 bedroom / 1 bath. Then we moved up from there. We certainly did not live like my parents lived, but we also didn’t have the debt that so many new couples immediately place themselves under.

3. Compromise

Generally in a marriage, one person likes to spend money while the other likes to save. Neither of these desires is bad, but both can be harmful if taken to the extreme. Imagine one spouse wanting to save $200 to put toward their child’s education fund, but the other spouse spends that $200 on a new DVD player. This will cause problems. The only way to solve this problem is to compromise. Sometimes let the spending spouse spend and sometimes let the saving spouse save, but do both within reason.
