How I Doubled My Opt-in Rate!
Opt-ins - pretty much the lifeblood of any online business. Opt-ins are contact information. Opt-ins are people who have said ‘OK’. Opt-ins are people that have given you permission to talk to them. Most importantly, opt-ins are potential customers. When you ask someone to supply their contact information, you are asking to go out on the first date. When they give you their contact information, they are saying ‘Yes’. They trust you enough and want what you are offering enough to continue the conversation. So let me tell you how I doubled my opt-in rate. It was a rather simple process and took only about an hour. If you follow the steps in this article, you will be able to do the same in a matter of minutes. I have a squeeze page at www.FreeAndEasyMoney.com. It is a basic squeeze page that gives the visitor basic information. It tells them the purpose of the website, what they need to do, and then asks them for their contact information. Not too much contact information – just their first name, email address, and how they heard about the website. Using this basic template, I was getting an opt-in rate of about 8% - 10%. I did not think that percentage was terrible, but I wanted to see if I could get the opt-in rate up to 20%. I knew, however, that something was missing. Something was not getting the visitor’s attention. I needed something to make them want to give me their information now! And I finally realized what that missing ingredient was – a sense of urgency! I was not pressing hard enough for their information. I was just laying my cards on the table and then letting them walk away with the feeling that they could come back at any time. And most of them were walking away, but they never came back. So I had lost them forever. Now a lot of websites introduce a sense of urgency by giving some type of deadline or ending date. In essence, telling the visitor that if they do not act today, the deal will be gone. Problem was, I did not want to give a deadline or offer a special deal. I was still trying to find that middle ground that allowed me to maximize customer response while maximizing profit. So I did not want to play around with my offer or give special deals that would end at a certain time. So this is what I did – I added a countdown timer! That’s it. Just a simple 30-minute countdown timer at the top of the page! The purpose of this timer was to indicate to the visitor how quickly they could complete the offer. Now, at the end of the 30 minutes, nothing happens (except the timer stops!), but the timer gave the visitor a visual and mental sense of urgency that made them want to respond. And the way they responded was signing up as an opt-in to get more information. Brilliant! Now remember, before I added the countdown timer, my opt-in rate was 8% - 10%. Without changing a thing on the squeeze page other than adding the timer, my opt-in rate has increased to 16% - 18%! Not quite to my 20% goal, but almost there! So how hard is it to add a timer? Can it be added to any website? Well, it is not hard at all to add the timer. From scratch, it took me about an hour. For you, if you follow the steps, it will take just a handful of minutes. And if you can change your website, you can add a timer.
